During the hot summer it is very important that you keep mowing height high. You want to create shade for your turf and minimize stress to the lawn. Typically, during the summer months of June, July, and August we like to raise mowing heights up to 4” to 5” even. Rule Number 2- The 1/3rd rule
Even more important that just mowing high would be the 1/3rd rule. What this rule talks about is not taking more than 1/3rd of the length of your grass blade off at anyone cutting. So, by mowing higher and on a weekly basis you will avoid breaking that rule. This is key for lawncare and the health. It minimizes the stress to the turf and with reduce weeds that come up as well.

Rule 3: Keep an eye for signs of fungus
With humidity and wet conditions combined with hot temps it is a recipe for fungus to develop on your turf. If you are seeing any of the signs of fungus on your turf from the image below, then you may have possible fungus forming. If you are noticing any of these, you may want to consider applying fungicide to control and minimize the spread of it. In addition once you have fugus it is hard to see immediate improvement, but it is important to stop the spread. Final points
During summer when your lawn is under stress it is very important to maintain good mowing practices. You never want to mow the lawn very short during the heat of the summer and potential drought seasons. This could damage your turf. Fungus also plays a big part and some years it can be worse than others. Regardless the summer most likely will leave some spots of your turf damaged and that is where aeration and overseeding will come in big come the fall timeframe to help rebuild back the damaged spots.
