Summer can be one of the toughest seasons for your lawn. If you’ve noticed yellow patches, brown spots, thinning grass, or a lawn that just doesn’t have that rich green color anymore, you’re certainly not alone. Every year, homeowners throughout Bucks County, Montgomery County, and surrounding Pennsylvania communities wonder why their lawn looks stressed—even though they’ve been watering or applying lawn fertilizer.
The truth is, achieving a thick lawn and maintaining a lush lawn during the heat of summer requires more than simply spreading fertilizer. Healthy turf is the result of several factors working together. At RD’s Total Lawn, we’ve helped hundreds of homeowners transform struggling lawns into beautiful, healthy landscapes by focusing on what we call the Summer Triple Threat.
If your goal is a greener, healthier lawn this summer, these three lawn care tips should be at the top of your list.
One of the biggest misconceptions in lawn care is that grass stops growing during the summer and doesn’t need fertilizer. While growth naturally slows during periods of heat and drought, your lawn is still actively using nutrients to survive stress.
A professionally designed lawn fertilizer program helps:
However, not every fertilizer is designed for summer applications.
Applying too much nitrogen, using the wrong fertilizer blend, or fertilizing at the wrong time can actually create more stress, resulting in burned grass, excessive top growth, and additional yellow patches.
Professional lawn care companies use carefully selected slow-release fertilizers that provide nutrients over time without overwhelming the turf during extreme temperatures.
At RD’s Total Lawn, every application is timed specifically for Pennsylvania’s growing conditions to maximize results while protecting your lawn during the hottest months.
This is one of the most common questions we receive from homeowners across Bucks County.
While fertilizer is important, yellow grass can also be caused by:
Fertilizer alone can’t fix every lawn problem. That’s why proper diagnosis is so important before simply adding more products.
If there’s one simple change homeowners can make that instantly improves lawn health, it’s raising the mower deck.
Many people believe cutting grass shorter means mowing less often. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually true.
Scalping your lawn creates unnecessary stress and can quickly lead to:
For the cool-season grasses common throughout Bucks County, including Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, and Perennial Ryegrass, we recommend maintaining a mowing height of approximately 4 inches during the summer.
Taller grass provides several important benefits:
Think of your grass like a solar panel. The more leaf surface it has, the more energy it can produce to stay healthy during stressful weather.
Watering is one of the most misunderstood aspects of summer lawn care.
Many homeowners either water too often or not enough.
The goal isn’t daily watering.
The goal is deep watering.
Your lawn generally needs 1 to 2 inches of water each week, including rainfall.
If Mother Nature isn’t providing enough, irrigation becomes essential.
For the healthiest lawn possible:
Morning watering allows moisture to soak into the soil before the day’s heat causes evaporation.
Watering late in the evening, however, can leave the lawn wet overnight, creating ideal conditions for fungal diseases that are common during Pennsylvania summers.
Deep, infrequent watering trains roots to grow farther into the soil where moisture remains available during dry periods.
The result?
A stronger, greener, more drought-resistant lawn.
Even homeowners who fertilize, mow correctly, and water consistently can still experience lawn issues.
Some of the most common problems we diagnose include:
Hot temperatures combined with humidity can trigger diseases like:
These diseases often appear as irregular yellow patches or brown circles throughout the lawn.
Grubs feed on grassroots beneath the soil.
Signs include:
Preventative grub control is often far easier and less expensive than repairing the damage after it occurs.
Years of foot traffic, heavy clay soils, and construction can leave soil compacted.
Compacted soil restricts:
This often leads to a lawn that remains thin despite regular fertilizer applications.
Applying too much fertilizer, applying it too frequently, or choosing the wrong fertilizer product can all create problems.
Professional lawn care programs are designed to provide exactly what your lawn needs throughout the year—not too much and not too little.
