I recently had the chance to sit down with Matt Foreman on the Mow Money, Mow Problems Podcast, a show dedicated to the real stories behind green industry businesses. We talked about how RD’s Total Lawn got started, what it took to build our reputation in Bucks County, and where we are headed next.
I figured it was worth turning some of that conversation into something useful for homeowners who are doing their research and trying to figure out who they can actually trust with their lawn.
So here is the honest version of our story, and a few things I think every homeowner should know before hiring a lawn care company.
Back in 2018, I was working full time at Coca-Cola. My wife was a teacher. We had just gotten into Dave Ramsey, were paying off debt, and trying to save up for her maternity leave with our second child.
I grabbed a push mower, a string trimmer, and a backpack blower, and started cutting lawns after work and on Saturdays.
The goal was simple: extra money. That was it.
But pretty quickly I realized there was something here. I liked working for myself. I liked talking to customers directly. I liked seeing the before and after of a property. And I started thinking, maybe one day I can do this full time.
It took seven seasons of nights and weekends before I finally made that leap. By then we had crews running, employees I trusted, and a business I felt confident could support my family of five.
Today, RD’s Total Lawn has 15 employees across four divisions: lawn mowing, landscaping, fertilizer and weed control treatments, and snow and ice removal. We serve residential clients across Bucks County and surrounding areas.
One of the things Matt and I talked a lot about on the podcast was Google reviews, and I want to be straight with you about why we take them so seriously.
We currently have over 400 Google reviews with a 4.9 star rating. That did not happen by accident, but it also did not require any tricks.
The secret is do good work, then ask.
Most happy customers will not leave a review on their own unless they happen to be the type of person who thinks about it. You have to ask them. We built that into how we operate. Whether it is a text, an email, or a crew member following up after a job, we ask our customers if they were happy, and if they were, we let them know it would mean a lot to us if they shared that.
Over time those reviews have done something really important for our business. They have made it easier for new customers to trust us right away. When someone reaches out for a price and we ask them to put a card on file to get started, almost no one pushes back. Because they have already seen what four hundred of their neighbors think of us.
If you are a homeowner shopping for a lawn care company, reviews are probably the most honest signal you have. Look for companies with a lot of them, a high rating, and consistent responses from the owner when something goes wrong. That last part tells you a lot about how they actually run their business.
A lot of lawn care companies in this area will tell you they care about quality. We try to show it instead.
We wrap every truck and trailer with our branding. We put yard signs up after treatments. We post content regularly on social media. We want you to see RD’s Total Lawn everywhere in your neighborhood, not just because it looks good, but because when you finally need someone, we are the name that already feels familiar.
We are big enough to be reliable. We have a supervisor managing operations, two office staff handling all phones, texts, and emails, and crews that go out every day whether I am on site or not. If I go on vacation, your lawn still gets cut.
But we are small enough that you are not just a number. It is my initials on the truck. I still put my face behind this brand because I want you to know there is a real person accountable for your experience.
One of the things I said on the podcast that I think sums us up pretty well is this:
We are big enough to deliver, but small enough to care.
We will not always be perfect. We are human. We have messed up jobs before and it has cost us real money to make them right. But we always make them right, because our reputation is worth more than whatever we save in the short term.
