How do I properly prepare and seed an area to ensure it grows? Let’s go over the basics on that today.

Where to start to get a Green and Weed Free Lawn?

Step 1: Preparing the Area
First you’ll want to prepare the area that you want to seed. If you have dead
grass there or debris in the area you’ll want to rake that free to open up the area. You’ll
want to cultivate and loosen up the soil some. Typically can be done with a metal tip
rake or another tool. You just want to loosen up compacted soil and clear any dead
debris from the area that can block sunlight and nutrients.
Step 2:
Next you’ll want to bring in some nutrient rich soil. Something that is high in
nutrients and even better if starter fertilizer is already mixed in. Depending on the area
and how much is needed you’ll want to sprinkle some of that into the soil.

Step 3:
Third you’ll want to mix in some premium seed with no weed matter in it. I would
not skimp out on this step and get cheap seed. If you’re already spending the time and
money to do all the other work put down a quality product. If you soil doesn’t already
have some starter fertilizer you can put some of that into the soil as well.
Step 4:
We at RD’s Total Lawn like to use straw overtop the area. This will protect from
birds and other animals. It will help hold moisture in keeping the area wet for
germination. It also let’s people know to avoid the area of foot traffic and running
equipment over it which can disrupt the germination process. If you wanted some more
examples of work that we have done you can check us out at

Step 5:
Last but certainly not least step as it is one of the most important is to water it.
The area needs to stay moist as to not dry out. If it dries out in the middle of germination
the grass could die out and never grow. You’ll want to water 2 times daily for the first 10
days or so until you see germination coming up. Once the turf gets established you’ll
want to consider some type of fertilizer and weed control program to keep it healthy.

Final points
Timing is always key with lawncare. Seeding especially you have two main times
of year to do this with best results. Spring and Fall. Fall is much more ideal but it can be
done in the spring just need to be mindful of some of the risks of spring seeding.
