If your lawn is starting to brown in the summer, it might just be thirsty. Here is our breakdown on when is the best time of day to water the lawn and the WHY behind it.

Let’s break the day into morning, afternoon, and nighttime as 3 options.

Today we want to cover off on some key things to do in the heat of summer to keep your lawn healthy and green.

Nighttime Watering

You would think that maybe nighttime watering is better than not at all? Wrong. The issue with nighttime watering is any water that doesn’t get absorbed into the soil then sits on top of the plant (turf grass in this scenario) all night and can form into a fungus. Our goal is getting the water absorbed into the roots of the grass and not sit on top of the blade.

Afternoon watering

The next time we’ll lookout is afternoon watering. So, think like 12pm-3pm timeframe. This is typically the hottest time of day where the sun is the highest in the sky. Problem with watering at this time is it will primarily just be very ineffective. When watering the grass there is a good chance that the sun and heat will evaporate the water before it can even be effective and make its way into the soil. So, most your efforts with afternoon watering will be ineffective.   Regardless of watering you will also want to make sure you are on a fertility program where you are feeding your turf regularly. Morning Watering

Now onto the winner of morning watering. Ideally 5am-9am timeframe is best. You may have some dew on the grass which you can push down and use into the soil to be effective with your watering. The temperatures are cooler at this time to minimize evaporation. Then any water that doesn’t get absorbed and make its way into the soil will evaporate in the afternoon when the sun comes out, so you have no risk of anything sitting and fugus building up. So, for that our preferred time for watering the lawn is the morning.

Watering is great to do during a drought but another great way to build resilience in your grass during heat stress is to encourage deep roots of your grass. One keyway to do that is perform an annual aeration and overseeding. This opens your thatch layer and encourages your grass to develop deep roots which is key for surviving a hot and dry summer. The first areas that burn out are typically areas with shallow root systems. For more information about Aeration follow this link. Aeration and Overseeding Information

Final points

Watering is necessary for health of your lawn. Ideally is 1”-1.5” of water on your lawn a week. So, if we are getting some rains that week it will do but if you go into a stretch of an extended period of a week or more of no rain it’s a good practice to get the sprinklers out for your thirsty turf. Along with watering we obviously recommend a regular feeding of your lawn to give it all the nutrients that it needs and help fight weeds out.
